Section 8 versus Public Housing

Section 8 is tenant based subsidy for all Cheyenne Housing Authority jurisdictions, meaning you rent from a private landlord.

Public Housing are units owned by the Cheyenne Housing Authority and we are the landlord in the City of Cheyenne and the City of Laramie.


If you have already applied

  1. You can check your position on the wait list by calling 1-307-633-8339 on the 13th, 14th and 15th of each month.
  2. If you have questions NOT related to your status on the wait list (such as changes in income or household composition), please call the eligibility coordinator at 307-633-8338 during normal business hours.

Mail returned to us will result in being dropped from the waiting list. Please keep your address updated.


If you need to apply

The wait list is currently open.

The wait list is approximately 2 years from the date we receive your application.

We are NOT issuing vouchers at this time.

We are NOT honoring new HAP contracts at this time. Issuance and mover packets will not be accepted, and initial inspections will not take place.


What to expect

The application process

  1. Once the Cheyenne Housing Authority receives your completed application, it is entered into our system in order of the date it is received in our office.This will take approximately 4-6 weeks. Incomplete applications will be sent back to you. All persons in the household over the age of 18 must sign and intial all the forms in the application.
  2. Your application moves up through the list as units become available.
  3. When you reach the top the list, you will be invited to a "pooling" meeting and sent a checklist for third party verification that is needed to process the application. (i.e.; employment verification, child support, custody verification, non-wage income, etc)
  4. This information is based on the information you provided in the application. If something on the checklist no longer applies to you OR has become applicable, it is your responsibility to update that information accordingly and provide the CHA with the appropriate documentation.
  5. This third party verification is a crucial step in the application process. Incomplete packets will result in a notice that you are being dropped from the waiting list and will need to re-apply.
  6. A complete third party verification packet is worked in date order from the time it is received in our office.
  7. If background checks are requested or required, these must be complete for the application to be considered complete.
  8. Once the third party verification and background checks are received, you will be invited to an Issuance Meeting. If you are on Public Housing, you will be offered a unit at this time.
